Found this picture of the entrance to the lst Cav Div base camp at An
Khe, circa 1965-66 for posting in photo's. The camp was named after a
Major Radcliff who was a helicopter pilot in the advance party sent to
set up the camp in Aug (?) while the rest of us were on the high seas.
He was the first KIA of the Division in the Viet Nam war, killed while
piloting his aircraft by a heavy machine gun round that came from
beneath.  His death forced the aviation community to re-look at putting
some kind of armor on board lift aircraft and eventually the seats became
armor protected.  In the interim, it was not uncommon for pilots to sit
on their flak vests while flying.   LTC Knox
