On 16 Feb 66, B/2-5 CAV was tasked to proceed overland and set up a "Blocking Position" in a valley know as the Song Bien, constituting the "Anvil", upon which the remaining 5 rifle companies of the 1st and 2d Battalions would "Hammer" the enemy. As it turned out there was a Heavy Weapons Bn living there in bunkers, and the craters were from a previous air strike some months back, based on the radio transmitter emanating out of there. On 17 Feb, we attacked for 15 minutes, and defended for 9 hours, still accomplishing the mission, by being the "bait" while the other 5 rifle companies were rappelled or air landed at the top of the mountains and swept the enemy down to our positions. The crater pix were taken during and just after the battle. We lost 9 killed, and had 56 wounded out of 120 men. We made the Pacific Stars and Stripes front page.
