2. LZ Bird in Binh Dinh Province
the morning after it was almost overrun -
12/27/66. C Co made a night air assault into the LZ as part of the relief
force - C 1/12 and 2 artillery batteries took heavy casualties
in the attack by a mixed VC/NVA force.
webmaster note: Photos like this one deserve a Pulitzer, notice the G.I.'s, kind of like a high school dance, all the boys on one side of the gym, but now the party is over, this memory and many others will trigger questions about morality and the motivations of war, forever. These NVA/VC were intent on doing the same thing to those C 1/5 guys standing there and we don't see the casualties of C1/12 and the Red Legs (Artillery Crewmen). The VC in the foreground wearing the steel pot may have been ARVN by day and VC at night.
